4 stars Treats the reader as an individual 2010-04-11

I am a few years away from 50 but sometimes find it difficult to know what to wear - don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb but don't want to look too staid either. I have managed to lose some weight over the last year and wanted to replace items in my wardrobe carefully, only with things that really suit me in shape as well as colour. I had my colours "done" a while ago so I have an idea about the right colours but I have been confused by advice in books about the right shapes to wear.

I bought this book having read the reviews from other readers. When the book first arrived I was a bit disappointed as there are no pictures / photographs inside (yes, I did use the look inside feature on line but must have forgotten there were no pics!).

However I read the book anyway - and I have found it really useful. I like the fact that Sue does not stick too rigidly to mandates about what you must wear but acknowledges that you are an individual so some styles might suit your shape but not your personality or liefstyle.

I felt that this book explained proportion much better than other books (yes, ones with photos / pictures in them!)and covered how this affects what suits you.

I think I will get one of the colour me beautiful books to complement this one but this is a great book and well worth reading and then acting on the advice inside.

4 stars Solid and easy to follow advice 2010-03-21

In reading this book I have gained some very useful insights into what I am doing right, and more often, what I have been doing wrong in looking my best. I have never been much of a fashionista and loath shopping. Armed with this new knowledge I am alrady seeing a difference in my choices and feeling 'fab' for them. Most useful book.

If you have no sense of style and want to look provincial, this is the book for you.
If you used to be stylish but feel that you have lost your way a bit, then I'd recommend Frederic Fekkai's A Year of Style; Charla Krup's How not to look old, and Christopher Hopkins' Staging your comeback

really enjoyed reading this book. Found it helpful in may areas, and she comes across as very cheerful and positive. I feel though that this should not be limited to the over fifties i would have liked to have known this when i was a lot younger to give me a good grounding in choosing the right wardrobe for my body shape and building up a good basic collection of clothes, can only reccomend this for any age group.

5 stars Fantastic book, worth every last penny! 2009-09-10

I love this book to pieces! It is certainly the best book on dressing over fifty that I have ever seen. One of my obsessions is make-over books, on which I now count myself a bit of an expert, having had almost everyone going at some stage! Having never been confident in my appearance, I have studied every word, hoping to be transformed into something wonderful. The great thing about Sue's book is that she encourages you to be a better version of yourself, which is really what its all about; then you can get on with the rest of your life.

I love her pithy, witty style of writing and she talks so much good sense. I agree with her that we should look modern over 50, we do live in the 21 century, so lets look like it. As she points out, there is a ground between the elasticated trousers and the pelmet skirt, which can still look sharp and altogether. She talks so much sense and helps you to understand the nuances of modern dress which you may have fallen behind with (i.e. don't wear matching necklace and earrings - truely naff looking nowadays). These little things can truely reveal whether you still have it or not,and they do change with time. there aren't any pics, but I think this helps in a strange way, as it can be tempting to compare yourself to these, or take a dislike to, or even copy how someone is made over. Sue really encourages you to be yourself, first and foremost. She is also a trained life coach which helps a lot in her understanding of people and motivations/female pychology.

I would have liked to have seen her personally for colour advise, but living some distance away, I found an advisor (Colour me Beautiful) she knew locally from her website, and with some trepidation, went along. This turned out to be the some of the best money I'd ever spent - a wonderful experience! Enjoyable, but I learnt so much, and found out that I wasnt in the colour group I thought I was from looking at advise in books. I would, therefore, strongly suggest that if your colouring isn't obvious, you go along to a trained counsellor (preferably a master one, such as Sue or others at this level) and get it done professionally. It is only the cost of one cut and colour at a good salon, the effects last much longer too. Used in conjuction with this book, it is possible to catch up with yourself again, and help yourself to look the best you can. It has done wonders for my confidence and spread over into other areas of my life as well.
